Every family deserves support without judgement, and that belief has always been at the heart of what I do. I’m passionate about helping families understand not only their children’s sleep, but to work in partnership to empower and support. Sleep never exists in isolation from the rest of family life.
Before Sleep Nurse UK, I worked as a health visitor. And I saw firsthand that not all families start from the same place. I sat alongside families facing incredibly difficult circumstances. Families fleeing domestic violence. Families who had arrived in the UK seeking refuge. Families struggling to make ends meet and wondering how they would afford the essentials their baby needed. I saw true poverty first-hand. I sat and listened to families stories, their struggles and hopes.
Those experiences have stayed with me. I remember those families.
And I saw that sometimes, knowing what your child needs isn’t the problem. Being able to access it is.
Sleep poverty is real
Children need a safe, comfortable place to sleep, yet for some families, even this basic need can be difficult to meet.
Research from Barnardo’s found that an estimated 894,000 children in the UK had to share a bed or sleep on the floor because their families couldn’t afford another bed. Its research also found that, in over one million families, a parent had given up their own bed so their child had somewhere to sleep. The cost-of-living crisis has made these pressures even harder for many families.
These figures are difficult to ignore.
I believe every parent deserves to feel supported, not judged. And I recognise that advice alone cannot solve every challenge a family faces. Sometimes, practical help is needed, too.
Introducing my partnership with TOGS
That’s why I’m so pleased that Sleep Nurse UK is supporting TOGS, a local project helping families across the Midlands access essential items for their babies and children, including safe sleep equipment.
As part of this partnership, £15 from every completed 1:1 family I support will go towards helping fund safe sleep equipment through TOGS. I’ll make these contributions quarterly.
It’s a practical commitment that allows my business to contribute to the important work already happening in our local community.
I know this won’t solve sleep poverty on its own. But I believe small, consistent contributions matter, and I’m proud that Sleep Nurse UK can play a part.
A bigger picture
For me, Sleep Nurse UK has always been about more than helping babies sleep. It’s about empowering parents, building confidence and understanding the individual circumstances every family brings.
I want that support to extend beyond the families I work with directly, too.
My hope is that, by sharing more about TOGS and the work they do, I can help raise awareness of sleep poverty and the practical support available to families who need it.
Because every family deserves dignity, compassion and the chance to thrive, whatever their circumstances.
And I’m really proud that this is another way Sleep Nurse UK can put those values into practice.
